I found the clerks' mess a bunch of bright good fellows. The note of patriotism righted me and I looked a third time. Another voice, stalwart, elated, cut through it like a sword. "Don't shoot, Smith, we're coming; save that hound for the halter!"

I remarked that had I been in her place I should either have sunk into the mire, so to speak, or thrown myself, literally, into the river.
